How Often Should I Get a Full Body Skin Exam?

“One of the most common questions I’m asked as a provider, pertains to how often patients should get a full body skin exam (FBSE). While there is no standard answer for this, with wide variation amongst different experts and committees, a generalized answer is to suggest annual skin exams. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States affecting more than 1 million Americans every year. Skin cancer can happen at any age making no patient too young, or too old, to get a skin exam.

Although there is no specific age to begin FBSEs, here are some compelling reasons to be evaluated:

  •   Family history of skin cancer
  •   Personal history of multiple blistering sunburns
  •   Fair skin, light hair, light eye color
  •   Personal history of tanning bed use
  •   More than 25 moles
  •   Suspicious looking mole or skin lesion
  •   Concern or worry about any spot on your skin
  •   Age 50 and never had a baseline skin exam

While we suggest being aware of your skin and the spots that it has, having a dermatology provider evaluate you yearly is the best way to screen for, diagnose, and gain access to early treatment of skin cancer. If any of the above apply to you, or you have never had a FBSE, please schedule an appointment online or give us a call.  We would love to get you in for a thorough exam and meet you.”
